Craigburn Farm
The Sturt Gorge Recreation Park in the Adelaide foothills between Eden Hills and Flagstaff Hill is soon to grow by another 180ha thanks to the addition of adjacent Craigburn Farm.
Chris Gibson from the Million Trees Program said that an increase of this size is of great significance for Adelaide’s biodiversity and a rare event. “With the current area of Sturt Gorge being 250ha, the inclusion of Craigburn Farm equates to a 70 percent increase for the reserve”, he said.
The parcel of land, containing patches of Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa) woodland with an abundance of Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata) and SA Blue Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon) was once part of Minda Farm at Blackwood. It connects and buffers the Sturt Gorge Recreation Park which contains some of the largest and intact remnant communities of Grey Box woodland in the Adelaide Region.
The Craigburn Farm project intends to restore the landscape for it’s inclusion into the Sturt Gorge Recreation Park in the near future through the control of woody weeds, revegetation with local native species and native grassland management.
